Metro-Fi’s free wi-fi hasn’t been all that great in Brooklyn, it’s spotty, but at least it’s something. Today there’s news that Metro-Fi is potentially going to shut down it’s operations in the city. This is pretty unfortunate for us in Brooklyn because we have several nodes that work and presumably more than a few neighbors have free access through Metro-Fi. For example, the Brooklyn Action Corps uses Metro-Fi all the time during meetings at the Sacred Heart/Loaves and Fishes space. So what can we do to keep the free access alive in Brooklyn? Well, in the comment section of the Oregonian’s article the president of Portland’s Personal Telco (a free wi-fi collective) had this to say;
I’d just like to point out that, for $894,000, Personal Telco could do what we did on Mississippi Ave. at least 60 times over. In fact, we’d probably be able to do it closer to 90 times over, since some of the costs would be pooled between each neighborhood.
Anyone interested in helping Personal Telco to expand our coverage in light of MetroFi’s likely departure should not hesitate to get in contact with us, through our website or directly via e-mail.

So think about getting involved. For our tech savvy neighbors this can be a really cool way to establish free internet service in Brooklyn with a project we already know and like.
