Volunteer For Bike Count

June 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Brooklyn bicyclists, here’s a chance to show our ranks and help the City push bike riding along the path to continued success. The following is an email from Portland’s Transportation Bureau bike guru Roger Geller

Hello All,

Summer is around the corner, and that means it’s time once again for our Annual Summer Bike Counts.

It’s no secret that the number of bicyclists riding in Portland is booming. Last year’s counts revealed the third straight year of double-digit increases…and that was before $4 per gallon gas prices.

Come help us count bicyclists, like the 70+ volunteers who took part last year, to find out just how popular it’s becoming to “go by bike” throughout the city.

Thanks to last year’s impressive response to our call for volunteers, we were able to span the entire city and collect bicycle counts at nearly 100 locations (see the report summarizing our findings here: http://www.portlandonline.com/shared/cfm/image.cfm?id=169951 ). The counts, and the work of our volunteers, are integral to tracking our progress in reaching our goal of making the bicycle a part of daily life in Portland.

Never ones to be satisfied with prior success, this year we are looking to further expand our count locations. This means we’ll need more volunteers.

Here’s what you can do:

Step 1: Come to the Volunteer Training/Orientation
Thursday, June 26th, 5:00-6:00 pm
Where: Conference Room B, The Portland Building (1120 SW 5th Avenue, 2nd floor).
Pizza and soda will be provided.

Step 2: Count
Over the course of the summer (July-Sept), conduct at least one, two-hour bicycle count at one of the intersections we’ll have listed.

Step 3: Mail
Send us your completed count form in a self-addressed, stamped envelope which we will give you at the training.

Step 4: Self-Congratulation
We get great data and you get the satisfaction of knowing you played a crucial role in our efforts.

It’s that easy!

PLEASE RSVP TO: (so we know how much pizza to buy)

Thanks!
