Over 250 individuals have signed the Quiet Zone petition as of today. Much is happening on this front at the City level as well. Plans are already underway by Portland Bureau of Transportation to realign 8th and 9th Avenues, and to eliminate Division Place to eliminate one of the “at grade” crossings as a first step to make a Quiet Zone more feasible. The Division St. Citizen Advisory Committee went on a tour led by Tom Armstrong of the Portland Bureau of Transportation, and when a train went by as they were discussing redevelopment possibilities for the station area, everyone there agreed that it wasn’t possible to make the area work without a Quiet Zone. Commissioner Fritz is reported to be very supportive of the need to do comprehensive station area planning and recognizes the need for a Quiet Zone.
There will be two opportunities to speak to the issue of a quiet zone for SE Portland. All are welcome to attend, and to speak if there is time.
1. Noise Review Board: The NRB will meet August 12 to discuss train horn noise and Quiet Zones with TriMet.
Wed Aug 12, 6:00 pm, 1900 SW 4th Ave, Room 2500B (2nd floor)
2. HAND Board Meeting: TriMet and the City are tentatively scheduled to attend the HAND Board meeting on Tues Sept.15. An agenda will be available close to that date on the HAND website.
One more item: On the map of our petition signatures, we notice a big untouched area between 12th/Milwaukie and 21st Ave and Division and Powell (West Clinton), which will be the most affected by the train horns. If you live in this area, or know people there who would support the petition, please ask them to consider signing. They can find the petition at http://www.surveymonkey.com
Thanks to Kamala Bremer of for the Committee for a SE Portland Quiet Zone for this update.
