Weekend events: Groceries 4 Grout back-to-school drive and a Pedalpalooza ride

Saturday: Groceries 4 Grout back-to-school drive

Come support our families and kids in all different ways! Bring food and hygiene items for those in need, and also let’s celebrate back to school in person this year by bringing much-needed school supplies! You can also bring your redeemable bottles and cans for the Friends of Brooklyn Park Summer Youth Park Program.

More details on the drive event page.

Sunday: ESJ Pedalpalooza ride

The Equity & Social Justice Committee is hosting a queer & BIPoC organized mural viewing — this is inclusive of all paces of riders with an emphasis on whatever feels comfortable for you. This ride through inner SE Portland is 5 miles long and visits about 15 murals ending at Portland Cà Phê for drinks and to see Andy Chiu’s “Vietnam” mural inside. We think the loop will take 1 1/2 to 2 hours. We will of course be following current public health guidelines.

Bring Biketown stations to Brooklyn

Biketown is Portland’s bikeshare system. Brooklyn is in the Biketown service area, but doesn’t have any stations. This makes it less likely to find a bike in the neighborhood, and it also costs extra to lock up a bike somewhere other than a station. The current stations are as much as a mile away from some parts of the neighborhood, and often require a difficult crossing of a busy street like Powell.

The City currently is running a survey asking where to place new stations. We could definitely use some in the neighborhood! Take the survey and tell them where you’d like them to place the new stations.

The Brooklyn Land Use & Transportation Committee helped identify 3 locations for stations that would improve bikeshare access for the whole neighborhood:

  • SE 17th Ave & Mall St
  • SE Milwaukie Ave & Pershing St
  • SE Lafayette St & 21st Ave

You can submit up to 5 locations in the survey. Let the city know what you think!

Gideon Overcrossing now open

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) announced today that the Gideon Overcrossing is now open.

The Gideon Overcrossing is a bike and pedestrian bridge that provides a new north–south connection above the rail tracks near the Clinton St / SE 12th Ave MAX Station. It spans from SE 13th Place at Gideon Street on the south side to SE 14th Avenue on the north.

This new bridge provides an alternative to the at-grade crossing at SE Milwaukie/11th/12th Avenues, especially when trains are blocking the intersection. For more details, check out the PBOT press release.
